湯米·狄波拉（Tomie dePaola），1934年出生于美國康乃狄克州，1956年畢業于布雷克美術學校，開始投入創作圖畫書的行列。三十五歲時，狄波拉從加州美術工藝學院拿到了碩士學位。次年，他又在朗山學院得到相當于博士的學位。在藝術學院執教數年后，狄波拉最終還是決心放棄教職，專心奉獻于兒童文學。
現在，湯米·狄波拉已經是美國最重要的兒童圖畫書作家之一。除了他自寫自畫的創作之外，他還為一百多本書畫過插圖。他的作品常有他以自己的家庭為背景，從自己真情實感的角度出發，描寫家人之間的濃密親情，真切而令人感動。
